Mobility in Greece

''Mobile Game-Based  Learning  &  Creative Drama''

30 October 2022 - 5 November 2022

Programme meeting

Dimotiko Scholeio Plateos Imathias Greece is the hosting partner of 5 days training activities during 30 October 2022 - 5 November 2022. Teachers of different nationalities (5 teachers from Kicevo and 5 teachers from Konya) worked in mixed teamwork to experience new teaching methods and collaborative approaches on environmental issues, creating awareness of European citizenship and  improving 21st century skills. The inadequacy of traditional methods in the education system in teaching new information to technology age children is the main topic. Teachers discussed about the digital tools, digital platforms, mobile game-based applications in teaching the subject of climate change, sustainability, conservation of natural resources, etc.

Activities &  Workshops: ''Conservation  of  Natural Resources''

Enjoyable and effective learning by using video, animation, mobile game-based applications, digital tools and digital platforms.

The teachers working in mixed groups watched and evaluated animations on water and electricity saving (Wordwall, Toontastic application, Toony Tool, Canva).
They made posters by researching electricity and water saving to spread the importance of conserving natural resources.
Workshop with teachers and 6th graders about how to make seed paper using recycled newspapers, how to make paper mache, to place the flower or vegetable or herb seeds, to knead and shape with a coup-pat (an alternative gift for those we love).
The teachers explaining the good practices about ''Lunch without loss'' and '' Waste hunting''. The partners discussed about their school curriculum.
''Little Green stories'' A movie by students and teachers of Dimotiko Scholeio Plateos Imathias about green practices in everyday school life to protect the environment. Also, they presented all the actions on environmental topics and the podcast by 6th graders.

''Little green stories''

A movie for children and adults about new habits in daily life to be green and to give a green future to our planet

A mixed group of 5th and 6th graders used an idea that came up spontaneously during recess to sensitize their classmates to simple daily routines of school life. They discussed, shared ideas, experimented and ended up capturing on video automated unsustainable actions of students at school. In fact, as they rightly underlined in the group discussions-problems, the adult members in the school also operate in a way that is not helpful for sustainable management. The thought of "something small" the children to do for the planet, our big home, evolved into "something important" fruitful and creative for the whole school community. First, the students decided the topics to focus on, then they thought about how to approach it, then they transformed the negative footprint of sounds and noises into an ecological footprint. They came up with the proposal of sorting and recycling materials as behaviors of care and support of the future. They left no room for the undecided. "Now," they shouted, because time is now running backwards.

Thus, the students proposed as feasible: 1) the adoption of green commuting by bicycle to school, 2) the conscious use and consumption of electricity, e.g. in a sunny classroom the eyes fall on the open lamps that refer to the image of the burning of lignite in the neighboring factories of Ptolemais, 3) respect for the consumption of water as a good that belongs to everyone, 4) the replacement of plastics, paper or a use of cookie packaging materials from fixed food containers and water containers by all school children. The comment of a student upon completion of the action planning is highlighted: "imagine in all the schools of Greece, if the students and teachers follow our suggestions, how many fewer plastic bottles per day, per month, how many fewer plastic bags, how much more water for more people, etc.'' final produced material (the video) was shown to each class separately offering the occasion for dialogue, reflection and critical thinking.  So, each of us is a little green story.

The Planet is in danger and the students of the 6th grade have an ecological message to protect the Planet. Simple suggestions, they are implemented easily in our everyday life. It concerns all of us.

Activity: ''Art  & Climate Change''

The teachers visited the Telloglio Institute of Thessaloniki, which belongs to the Aristotle University and participated in an educational program named "Nature: Cries and Whispers" which was based on the exhibition of art works by Greek and foreign artists, who captured in their works phenomena related to climate change. The teachers were guided by the museologist through the exhibition, were inspired and expressed their impressions and feelings and were informed in detail about the action and lesson plans for students 7-14 years old. The exhibition "Nature: Cries and Whispers" contributes to the understanding of the relationship between climate change and human behavior with a critical eye at the same time it enhances creativity by mobilizing the desire for personal interventions.

Questionnaires & focus groups

The partners completed a questionnaire about the educational system in Greece and digital tools in teaching.

Before mobility to Greece, a questionnaire by google forms was given to the students of 5th, 6th grades  on climate change, what they know, which are the resources of their information, if they consider it is important to study climate change at school, etc. The results of the completion of the questionnaire by 45 students from Kicevo and Konya and 33 students from Greece were presented and issues related to the detailed study programs of each country regarding ''Climate change'' were discussed.

Questionnaire on the 17 sustainable development goals & critical thinking

Βefore mobility to Greece, a sample of 5th and 6th graders from the three schools completed  a questionnaire on the subject of the 17 sustainable goals. Students observing photos of the modern world are asked to associate them with the respective objectives. Critical thinking skill is an essential skill of the 21st century. The results were presented and the teachers discussed about the lesson plans that would be integrated into their curriculm to cultivate students' environmental awareness.

After the activities the teachers using the digital tool ''MentiMeter'' answered the question which digital tools they feel confident to use in their daily lessons. Then they presented the main characteristics of the specific digital tools, they discussed about the added value of each one in the preparation of the lessons, the effectiveness of the digital tools as means of evaluating the objectives of a teaching unit.
